President of the Republic at conferring the decoration to Björn von Sydow at Kadriorg, on 14 April 2003
14.04.2003

Dear Mr Björn von Sydow,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

On its Independence Day the Republic of Estonia acknowledges the services of outstanding people to our state. These are people who through their relentless efforts, persistent work and sometimes even through self-sacrifice create values of the life in the very meaning of the word.

I am pleased to say that you have been one of the decorated people this year.

Dear Mr Björn von Sydow,

As the supreme commander of Estonian national defence I am pleased to acknowledge that you have given a tremendous contribution to building up our defence forces and developing defence cooperation between the Republic of Estonia and the Kingdom of Sweden. It is difficult to underestimate this work.

Estonian and Swedish relations have only gained through this cooperation. our friendly attitude and long-term support to Estonia's independence aspirations is great honour for us. Allow me to recall the time when you were the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Sweden.

In 2001 Sweden presented Estonia with infantry battalion equipment. Several cooperation agreements were signed between the Republic of Estonia and the Kingdom of Sweden. Sweden has provided military assistance to Estonia. You have played a significant role, with your personal commitment and support to the Republic of Estonia. Last year we received an invitation to join NATO and we have already signed the Protocol of Accession. I would like to express our gratitude to you and the Kingdom of Sweden for your support to our NATO aspirations.

Dear Mr Björn von Sydow,

Allow me to reiterate my words of gratitude for the work done! And for your commitment!

As a sign of recognition for your services I have conferred on you the Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana, 1st Class. Allow me to bestow it personally.
