The President of the Republic honoured the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee

President Arnold Rüütel andis presented General Kujat with the 1st Class Order of the Cross of the EaglePresident Arnold Rüütel this morning at Kadriorg met with General Harald Kujat, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee.

The Head of State presented General Kujat with the 1st Class Order of the Cross of the Eagle that had been conferred on him on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia. General Kujat has earned our high state decoration for his support to Estonia's accession to NATO and promoting co-operation between the Estonian and German defence forces.

At the festive ceremony, the President expressed to both the recipient of the order and his homeland thanks for their assistance to strengthening Estonia's defence capability, which has significantly sped up Estonia's preparations to join NATO. The Head of State noted that many Estonian officers and non-coms had enjoyed the possibility to do further training at German establishments of military education and that, on top of that, Germany had sent to Estonia military advisers and substantial material aid. According to the Head of State, thanks to that, Estonia's readiness to participate in international security system to safeguard peace had increased.

Thanking for the high award, General Kujat said that supporting the development of Estonia's defence capabilities had been very important to him and, therefore, he was very pleased with Estonia having received an invitation to join NATO. The General appreciated Estonia’s efforts in developing its territorial defence and noted that, while building defence structures, our country should, first of all, consider its own needs and possibilities.
