The President of the Republic met with the Ambassador of Belgium

President Arnold Rüütel at Kadriorg received the Ambassador of Belgium, Johan van DesselPresident Arnold Rüütel today at noon at Kadriorg received the Ambassador of Belgium, Johan van Dessel, who presented his credentials.

The President expressed his satisfaction with the development of relations between Estonia and Belgium since not only our political but also economic and cultural contacts had been enlivened from year to year. Close and productive co-operation has been established with diverse regions of Belgium and, last spring, the Walloon and Baltic Chamber of Commerce was opened.

The Estonian Head of State thanked Belgium for the support to our aspirations directed to the European Union and NATO, and voiced hope that also the ratification of the EU Accession Treaty and the Protocols of Accession to NATO would proceed without hindrance. In addition, the President gave the Ambassador an overview of the reforms carried out in Estonia.

The Ambassador of Belgium expressed his admiration for Estonia's achievements in the years after the restoration of independence. He emphasized that, beside the political and economic ties, the interpersonal contacts were of paramount importance too.
