The President of the Republic met with the Board of the Riigikogu

President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg greeted the newly elected Board of the 10th Riigikogu.

At the President's meeting with the Chairwoman of the Riigikogu, Ene Ergma, and the Deputy Chairmen, Toomas Savi and Peeter Kreitzberg, the issues to be given top priority by the Parliament were under discussion. The Head of State and the Board Members of the Riigikogu shared the view that the strongest efforts in the nearest future should be directed towards the preparations for joining the European Union and for the referendum on this matter.

The President expressed his desire to meet with the Board of the Riigikogu on a regular basis, thus continuing the tradition originating in the previous term of the Riigikogu. At these meetings, issues introduced in the parliament and having the critical importance for the development of our state would be discussed.

Prior to the meeting, the Head of State at the opening session of the 10th Riigikogu had delivered a speech calling on the representatives of the people to develop, through protecting the Constitution, our legal system based on the fundamental values of the Estonian state, and to seek, through directing elaborately the development of different areas of life, stability of our state.
