The President of the Republic met with the Chairman of the Mõõdukad
27.03.2003

President Arnold Rüütel concluded his consultations with the political parties elected to the Riigikogu by meeting this evening at Kadriorg with the Chairman of the People's Party Mõõdukad, Ivari Padar.

The focus of their conversation was on possibilities to further a new quality of rural life and regional development. The President and the leader of the Mõõdukad shared the view that the Estonian state should take measures to populate its territory and support social stability proceeding from the same principles as the European Union.

The participants of the meeting found that sustainable organic farming was one of the possibilities to restore full employment and to keep the traditional way of life in rural areas. They noted also that, at the moment, it was most important to inform agricultural producers of new enterprise opportunities arising from our approaching EU membership, which safeguard sustainable development. At the same time, Ivari Padar voiced doubts about whether the promises of the emerging ruling coalition were fit to offer effective solutions for the abovementioned area.

At the meeting, both sides emphasized the necessity to achieve a national agreement in order to make the young families living in the countryside feel secure, to improve our demographic situation and to make education accessible. Ivari Padar assured that it was the bedrock principle of the Mõõdukad to care for people and our country, which coincided in full with the national agreement's objectives announced so far.
