The President of the Republic met with the Chairman of the People's Union
26.03.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today continued his consultations with the political parties elected to the Riigikogu meeting at Kadriorg with the Chairman of the People's Union, Villu Reiljan.

The Head of State took interest in the coalition talks between the Res Publica, the Reform Party and the People's Union. He voiced his desire to see that safeguarding Estonia's sustainable development were the goal of the ruling coalition to be formed shortly. Vilju Reiljan shared President's opinion that the conclusion, as soon as possible, of our national agreement based on the principles of demographically and regionally balanced sustainable development would contribute to the achievement of a goal like that.

One of topics of their conversation was how to optimize Estonia's administrative system and enhance co-operation between local governments. They were of one accord that the status of county governors could not be changed without a comprehensive scheme of administrative reform and without amending several legal acts. They also talked about possibilities to draw local initiative and capabilities into usage of the European Union structural funds.

Before designating a candidate for Prime Minister, President Rüütel is intending to consult with all the political parties represented in the Riigikogu and, thus, meetings with the leaders of the Pro Patria Union and the Mõõdukad still lie ahead.
