The President of the Republic met with the Chairman of Res Publica
24.03.2003

President Arnold Rüütel today continued his consultations with political parties elected to the Riigikogu by meeting Res Publica's Chairman Juhan Parts at Kadriorg.

The Head of State was interested in what were the bedrock socio-economic positions of the Res Publica in its negotiations on forming a possible coalition. The President, on his part, voiced his wish that principles of paramount importance to the development of our nation - like focus on the family, high-quality free education, and social balance - be not ignored.

In President's opinion, on which Juhan Parts agreed as well, the political parties should make all-out efforts in order to reach a national agreement targeted at a regional and social balance.

The Head of State also deemed it necessary that the policy of balanced budget be re-introduced. Juhan Parts assured that their planned reform introducing graduated cuts in income tax and an increase in minimum income exempt from tax would not lead to budget deficit. In addition, he briefed the Head of State on his party's plans of administrative-territorial reform.

At the today's meeting, Juhan Parts gave President Rüütel also an overview of the course of coalition talks between the Res Publica, the Reform Party and the People's Union.
