The 85th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia will be celebrated with festive state ceremonies on February 23 and 24 in Tallinn.
On February 23 at 12:00 at the Kadriorg Art Museum, the festive ceremony ''Estonia is Grateful'' will begin, where the President of the Republic will present with state decorations outstanding scientists, educationalists, cultural figures, economists, freedom fighters, politicians, state and local government officials, and advocates of civil society, democracy and international co-operation.
In the morning of February 24 at 7:34, the national flag will be hoisted to the Tall Hermann Tower on the Toompea Hill. At 10:00, the President of the Republic will inspect a parade of the Estonian Defence Forces lead by the Commander of the Defence Forces, Vice Admiral Tarmo Kõuts, who also will give a speech.
At 11:30, the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will attend the Independence Day service in the Kaarli Church. At 13:00 in the hall of the Academy of Sciences, Prime Minister Siim Kallas will hand over this year's national science and culture prizes.
At 18:00, a festive concert in celebration of the 85th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia will begin in the theatre house Estonia, where President Arnold Rüütel will deliver his Independence Day speech.
At the concert, the Symphony Orchestra of the Estonian National Opera will play, the opera choir of the Estonian National Opera and the State Academic Male Choir co-performing. Conducted by Eri Klas, the overture ''Nimed marmortahvlil'' by Margo Kõlar will premiere and, in addition, ''Isamaale'' by Eino Tamberg, Mare's and Meelis duet from Villem Kapp's opera ''Lembitu'', ''Kaks saarlast'' by Eduard Tubin, Sanctus from oratorio ''Joonase lähetamine'' by Rudolf Tobias, and Raimund Kull's march ''Kodumaa'' be performed.
After the concert, a reception hosted by the President of the Republic and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel will take place in the theatre house Estonia. The orchestra going to play at the reception will be conducted by Peeter Saul. The Estonian Television will broadcast the anniversary events.
