The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of Iceland

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Iceland, Jón Baldvin HannibalssonPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Iceland, Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, who came to present his credentials.

Ambassador Hannibalsson at the meeting with the President recalled the times of the restoration of Estonia's independence when he had visited Estonia in his then capacity as Foreign Minister of Iceland. He spoke about similar past and common interest of Estonia and Iceland being both small countries. The President thanked Mr Hannibalsson for his support given and work done for the benefit of the Estonian state throughout times.

At the meeting, also the promotion of economic contacts between Estonia and Iceland with the focus primarily on the fields of fishery, information and gene technologies was under discussion. The President emphasized the necessity to continue the existing contacts and to work together in order to identify and develop new shared economic interests.

Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson conveyed to the Estonian Head of State regards from the President, the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister of Iceland.
