The National Defence Council discussed Estonia's readiness status

The National Defence Council convened by President Arnold Rüütel this afternoon at Kadriorg focussed on Estonia's internal readiness status in view of today's international situation.

First, the council by National Security Police Commissioner Jüri Pihl was briefed on the activities of his board in safeguarding Estonia's national security.

Thereafter, the Members of the National Defence Council heard ministries' summaries of their preparations for fulfilling the tasks deriving from the Emergency Preparedness Act. These overviews were presented by Siiri Oviir, Minister of Social Affairs, Toomas Varek, Minister of Internal Affairs, Jaanus Marrandi, Minister of Agriculture, and Heido Vitsur, Adviser to the Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications. The council took notice of the present situation and measures designed for future.

Jüri Luik, Head of the Estonian Delegation to the accession negotiations with NATO, briefed the National Defence Council on the course of negotiations and probable financial obligations concomitant with our NATO membership.
