The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of Hungary

The President of the Republic met the Ambassador of HungaryPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary, László Nikicser, who came to present his credentials.

At the meeting, they stated jointly that both the political and cultural relations between Estonia and Hungary were good, but the economic ties needed to be broadened. The Hungarian Ambassador made a proposal to establish an institution for the promotion of Estonian-Hungarian economic relations. László Nikicser also noted that 2002, however, was the first year when Estonia had had an export balance of trade with Hungary.

President Rüütel speaking about national security stressed that the true substance of these words was linked closer to the global processes day by day. ''The wish to contribute to safeguarding peace and security not only in Europe but all over the world has become a contemporary attitude. And these are the very perceptions which our countries share and which bring our peoples closer together,'' the President said addressing the Ambassador.

Ambassador Nikicser assured that Hungary supported Estonia's accession to NATO and added that Hungary would do its utmost to speed up the ratification of the accession treaty.

The next congress of Finno-Ugrian peoples going to take place 2004 in Tallinn also was under discussion at today's meeting.

The President of the Republic spoke highly of his last autumn's state visit to Hungary, during which he had had an opportunity to familiarize himself with the country's nature, culture, industries and agriculture. The President asked the Ambassador to give his cordial regards to the President of the Republic of Hungary, Ferenc Madl.
