The President of the Republic is in the County of Tartu
12.02.2003

Visiting the Biomeedikum of Tartu UniversityPresident Arnold Rüütel and Mrs Ingrid Rüütel today continued their tour of Tartu County visiting local companies and cultural establishments.

In the morning of the visit's second day, the guests familiarized themselves with the Limited Company Arens-Mööbel, the largest manufacturer of kitchen furniture in Estonia. This family firm belonging to Estonian owners is developing its manufacturing facilities in the rural municipality of Tartu where, thanks to the presence of advancing business, the municipality's infrastructure is forging ahead as well. A similar feature with appreciation was noted by the Head of State at Kõrveküla, where he called at a mill of the Limited Company Stahlhut.

Which factors further and which impede the progress of business, was one of the talking points at the President's meeting with local government leaders of the County of Tartu. The latters said that in their county, beyond promoting knowledge-based production, they paid heed also to the development of infrastructure and traditional enterprise including agriculture. The participants in the meeting agreed that development of rural regions and people profited most from the progress of modern production. The Head of State asked if, in each of the county's municipalities, there was at least one production plant employing several dozens of workers, and if a sufficient number of skilled workers were to be found on the spot. The President noted that he was pleased to learn that a regular network of enterprise was emerging across the County of Tartu. "However, that's not the case everywhere in Estonia. It is time to understand at last that we can talk about development only if our country as a whole were progressing in a well-balanced way," President Rüütel said.

Mrs Ingrid Rüütel at the same time called at the "Soomepoiste muuseum" (a museum of Estonian veterans who served in the Finnish Army in World War II) at Äksi and a library at Kõrveküla. Thereafter, they visited the "Biomeedikum" of Tartu University - the most modern building for medical pre-clinical education in the Baltic states.

In the afternoon, the President will visit the Port of Tartu and the rural municipality of Kambja.
