The President of the Republic met with a delegation of the Baltic Assembly27.01.2003
President Arnold Rüütel this evening at Kadriorg met the Delegation of the 9th Riigikogu to the Baltic Assembly to talk about the current and future co-operation between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
The participants in the meeting unanimously acknowledged several initiatives of the Baltic Assembly, thanks to which, for example, maritime tourism and environment-friendly small harbours have advanced, and upgrading the road and railway connecting the three countries is making progress too. In view of the accession to the European Union, the need to streamline the Baltic co-operation in this field was underscored. The Members of the Parliament also explained the expediency to reform the work of the Baltic Assembly. President Rüütel emphasized the importance to deepen contacts between the Baltic Assembly, the Benelux Interparliamentary Council and the Nordic Council.
In the conversation, they also agreed that the problems influencing people`s everyday life like, for instance, the status of a certain street in the Valga-Valka border region, must not be overlooked. In addition, the members of the delegation held that the Baltic co-operation and activities of the Baltic Assembly, so far, had received undeservedly little attention from the Estonian press.
The Delegation of the Baltic Assembly presented President Arnold Rüütel with the Baltic Assembly Medal, which the Estonian Head of State has earned through his activities promoting co-operation between the Baltic States. The incumbent President in the years 1995-1999 was repeatedly Chairman of the Presidium of the Baltic Assembly and, in the same period, headed the Riigikogu's delegation to the Baltic Assembly too.
