23.01.2003

The Ambassador of New Zealand, David Bruce Payton presented his credentials to the PresidentPresident Arnold Rüütel today at Kadriorg received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of New Zealand, David Bruce Payton, who came to present his credentials.

The main subject of discussion at their meeting was how to develop relations between our two countries. According to the Estonian Head of State, the relations between New Zealand and Estonia were only beginning to take shape and economic contacts had so far been modest, although there were plenty of chances to establish them. The same held true for the state of our cultural ties and tourism. Creation of a contractual basis for the relations between our two countries would definitely help to enliven the contacts, President Rüütel added.

Ambassador Payton said that Estonia and New Zealand being two of smaller members of international organisations had common interests in all possible areas of co-operation. In his capacity as Ambassador, he promised to do his best to contribute to the promotion of our bilateral relations. David Bruce Payton underscored New Zealand's great interest in political and economic developments in Europe, and support to and sympathy with Estonia's progress made towards the European Union and NATO.
