08.10.2002

President Arnold Rüütel late this afternoon at Kadriorg discussed with the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu the topical issues of Estonia's foreign relations.

The Head of State informed the Members of Parliament of his foreign-policy activities during his first year in office as President of the Republic ending just this day. According to the Head of State, he had focused mainly on ensuring that Estonia prepared well for the accession to the European Union and NATO. In a more detailed way, the President dealt with the results of his state visit paid to Hungary in September and with his forthcoming visit to Ukraine.

The President and the Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu shared the conviction that the co-ordination of Estonia's foreign-policy activities between the constitutional institutions of the President, the Parliament and the public authorities needs to be continuously streamlined.
