The President of the Republic entertained Ambassadors
02.06.2002

President Arnold Rüütel today in his Paslepa summer residence received the Ambassadors of foreign countries residing in Estonia and hosted for them a luncheon.

Addressing the Diplomatic Corps the President reassured that Estonia was continuously interested in good relations and co-operation in the directions of both East and West, both North and South. The Head of State emphasized that the course of Estonian foreign policy would not change even if the forthcoming elections of local governments and the Riigikogu should cause changes in our domestic policy.

"Due to the poll, growth of tensions in our domestic policy is definitely to be expected. At the same time, I do hope that it will lead to clarification of positions and to more certainty in politics," the President said. He admitted that Estonia still had a lot of work to do both in domestic and foreign policy, and it put to the test politicians' abilities to proceed from long-term interests, to make difficult but necessary decisions. As the most momentous of them the President propounded the tasks related to enlargement of NATO and the European Union.

At the luncheon table the President of the Republic noted that for Estonia, while joining the European Union, agriculture and the quotas allocated to Estonia constituted serious problems. According to the President it was inconceivable that Estonia should not be allowed to produce agricultural products in the quantity needed to feed its people.

The Ambassador of France, Jean Jacques Subrenat, speaking on behalf of the guests and showing great expertise in the history of Estonia and Läänemaa, noted that Estonia had reached its independence in a way worth serving as an example for the others. According to the Ambassador Estonia had prepared itself very well for the accession both to the European Union and to NATO. Mr Subrenat expressed the hope that Estonia shortly joined both the European Union and NATO.
