The President of the Republic designated Siim Kallas the candidate for Prime Minister18.01.2002
During the course of the consultations held to form a new government the President of the Republic, today afternoon at Kadriorg, met with the leaders of the two parties having the largest representations in the Riigikogu: the Centre Party and the Reform Party. In the meeting, Edgar Savisaar and Siim Kallas informed the Head of State of the coalition agreement between the Centre Party and the Reform Party having been concluded.
Pursuing the traditions of parliamentary democracies, the President of the Republic assigned the task of forming a new government to Edgar Savisaar as the Chairman of the party having the most seats in the Riigikogu but, whereas the the coalition partners had agreed to propose Siim Kallas as the candidate for Prime Minister, the President accepted their will and assigned the task of forming the government to the Chairman of the Reform Party, Siim Kallas.
