The President of the Republic of Estonia met Rait Maruste
29.10.2001

Arnold Rüütel, the President of the Republic of Estonia, met Rait Maruste, a Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in Kadriorg today. The President and Rait Maruste talked about the human rights situation in Estonia. They discussed matters related to ensuring the right to vote, as well as the issue of religious freedom for citizens. Maruste stated that no serious complaints against the Republic of Estonia have been submitted to the European Court of Human Rights and that few such complaints have been upheld. From the court΄s point of view it seems that the human rights situation in Estonia, as compared to many other European states, is good.

President Arnold Rüütel and Rait Maruste discussed the matters related to the independence of courts and judges and reached the conclusion that, proceeding from the Constitution, it is necessary to ensure the legal as well as financial independence of the court as a separate sphere of power. Amendments to the Constitution were also dealt with, including the necessity for Constitutional Court and amendments to be made regarding the endeavours of Estonia to become a member of the European Union.
